Market Mapping

Market Mapping

This guide breaks down how to use LinkedIn for networking and increasing visibility.

Part 1 - When there’s an active role

  • If there’s a live and active job, apply within 24 hours when you can. You can filter jobs that were posted within 24 hrs.

  • Earlier applications usually have a better chance of getting seen by recruiters.

Step 1: Go to the company’s LinkedIn page → click People → find the likely hiring manager. Look for the Director, VP, or Head of the team you’d be joining.

Step 2: Go to their profile and look for mutual connections. Message that mutual connection for a warm intro.

Warm Intro Message Template:

“Hey [Name] — hope you’re doing well. Sorry this is out of the blue. I’ll keep this short. I’m applying for the [Role] at [Company] and saw you’re connected to [Person]. Would you be open to making a warm intro? If yes, I can send a 2–3 sentence blurb + the job link to make it super easy to forward. I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!”

Part 2 - Relationship building

This path is for when there isn’t a job posted and you’re simply building genuine relationships within your industry.

Step 1: Look for hiring managers from your top 3 dream brands. What brands are you a true fan of? Who inspires you?

Step 2: Follow, don’t connect with those hiring people. They will show up on your LinkedIn feed.

Step 3: Look for their activity i.e when they’re featured on a Substack, spoke on a webinar, or shared an insightful post, and reference that in your outreach message.

(Most people don’t want to hop on a call with someone who is immediately asking for a job. It can make the interaction feel transactional, and that puts pressure on both sides.)

Relationship-driven Message Template:

“Hey [Name] — hope you’re doing well. I came across your feature on [X’s Substack] and resonated with what you said about [specific topic]. I know you’re probably busy, but if you’d be open to it, I’d love to grab 10–15 minutes of your time to learn more about your career journey. I’m really inspired by what you’ve built at [Company], and I promise to keep it brief and come prepared.”
